Upper School Summer Studies

The Benjamin School is excited to offer a summer program that provides unique academic opportunities which combine intensive academics, small-group learning, and individual attention in three- to six-week courses. 

Human Systems Biology- June 3 – June 20 8:30-1:30 p.m. (Seniors Only)                              
Fee: $1275.00

Description: This 3-week course satisfies a graduation requirement and will aim to introduce students to the human body, emphasizing the systems of the body, how they are interrelated, and how those systems are affected by the choices individuals make. The pace of this course is rigorous and will cover anatomy, physiology, and mental and physical health topics. Other concepts covered will include medical terminology, insurance and physicians, and the 11 systems of the human body, primarily focusing on the nervous, circulatory, digestive, respiratory, urinary, and reproductive systems. Dissections feature heavily in this course, and students must participate in each lab. There will be daily homework assignments, tests each morning, and one at-home experiment. The final exam is dissection based. If students have any underlying medical conditions that may cause nausea, fainting, or distress due to the dissections or discussions of blood and other medical-related conditions, please inform the teacher so appropriate preventive and precautionary measures may be taken. Prerequisite: Bio 213 or 214 

Description:This 3 week course uses the computer as a medium of artistic expression. Students will utilize industry-standard software including Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign to complete each design challenge. Using the fundamental components of design theory as a guide, students create engaging graphics in a variety of presentation forms including illustrations, books, posters and portraits. Through the use of varied and engaging exercises, students learn page layout and composition, typesetting, line art illustration, and the use of digital photographs. A strong focus is placed on visual thinking and the clear communication of ideas. This class is a Bring Your Own Device format and students will use their own laptops. We do have 5 stations available on campus for those students without a device or laptop. Chromebooks are not compatible for this class. 

* Introduction to Graphic Design satisfies either the Art / Innovation / Design credit required for graduation or a 1/2 credit toward the 1 year Fine Art credit.  

 

Description: This 6 week course satisfies a science graduation requirement and presents a study of the theories and laws governing the interaction of matter, energy and the forces of nature. Subjects include measurements, kinematics, energy, power, sound, heat, wave characteristics, light, electricity, and magnetism. Demonstrations, laboratory exercises, and computer simulations allow exploration, amplification, and reinforcement of the course contents. Emphasis is placed on conceptual understanding rather than performing algorithmic computations. Prerequisite: must be a rising junior or senior who successfully completed Algebra II.
