Lower school students proudly descended on Kennerly Field, each representing their homeroom’s assigned country, as the opening ceremonies of the 32nd annual Benjamin Olympic Games began on February 7.
Head of School Dave Faus welcomed students, parents, and spectators to the games, which began in 1990 as an educational endeavor and have since become a beloved annual tradition. The Olympic Day celebration is the culmination of a month-long multicultural study that includes the exploration of foreign customs and culture, including a culinary luncheon hosted on the eve of the Olympics.
Students competed in a variety of events against their classmates from dashes, to hurdles, relays, and the bean bag toss.
“The Olympics has quickly become one of my favorite Benjamin traditions,” said Faus who praised Faculty Olympic Day Coordinators Riordan Cheatham and Kathy Bailey for their tireless work to make the event run seamlessly.
“I look forward to seeing the grit, determination, and pride on our students’ faces as they compete in a variety of events while maintaining a high level of sportsmanship,” said Faus.
