US Raises Awareness For Suicide Prevention Month

The upper school had the privilege of hosting Minding Your Mind Speaker Carolyn as part of the school’s efforts to bring awareness to during Suicide Prevention Awareness Month.

Carolyn shared her personal story of courage, strength, and resilience while advocating for students to speak up and ask for help. She encouraged those listening in Benjamin Hall that they are not alone and asking for help is not a sign of weakness, but a sign of strength.

Upper School counselor Dr. Renea Yates who coordinated the event, also spearheaded a team of peer advisors and faculty members who passed out ribbons and stickers after the assembly.

Yates said students and faculty will also wear purple and teal today in support of suicide prevention awareness and in support of those impacted by suicide.

“Earlier in the month, students participated in an advisory activity focused on the character traits of kindness and acceptance and on the importance of knowing that what they say and what they do matters,” said Yates.

“My hope is that any students who are struggling will know they are not alone. I want them to know that it is okay to need support and to reach out for support. I want them to know they have a village of people here at The Benjamin School who care deeply about their mental well-being and are here to support them no matter where they are in their journey,” she said.
