US Honors Veterans Day With Special Assembly

The Benjamin Upper School celebrated Veterans Day with a special assembly saluting the country’s service men and women.

The Veterans Appreciation Club, helmed by faculty advisor and veteran Ken Archer and student director Luca Balzano, coordinated the event.

Congressman Brian Mast, serving in his fourth term representing the 21st Congressional District of Florida, served as the morning’s guest speaker.

Prior to his election to Congress, Mast served in the U.S. Army for more than 12 years.

Of our Nation’s veterans, Mast said they are serving a place and a people that they believe to be bigger and more important than just themselves as individuals.

“I hope that you all believe as you reflect on Veterans Day, you think about what it is that they were serving and you think about your own lives as well . . . when you look at this flag, the 50 stars and 13 red and white stripes, they [veterans] decided it means something to them. It has something worth defending, worth the sacrifice. For me, every day that I wake up under that flag I get to decide that today is better than yesterday. That’s what America means to me,” said Mast.
