Benjamin Students Aid Haiti, Bahamas

Marti Lotman
Middle School Spanish teacher Mr. Maddox and his advisory group have been hard at work collecting canned goods, water and other nonperishable items for those in Haiti and the Bahamas who were devastated by Hurricane Matthew.

“After seeing the mass devastation in Haiti and the Bahamas, I knew I had to do something,” says Maddox.

“The flooding and destruction they experienced could have easily happened to us if the storm didn't change paths. Mr. Hagy mentioned the importance of helping those who were impacted by Hurricane Matthew on Monday morning during assembly, so I spoke with my advisory, and we decided to collect items to help those in need.”

Social Studies teacher Mrs. Franzen will deliver those items to Stuart tomorrow where they will be flown over for delivery.

“My church works with Nancy Anderson on a project called ‘Hands Together With Haiti,’ so I knew a little about the country before the Hurricane, but they were really devastated so we wanted to help,” says eighth-grader Crystal Pauldo Devine, a member of Mr. Maddox’s advisory group.

She says Mr. Maddox was the first to get the ball rolling and brought in some canned items himself.

“They really need our help,” says Sydney Fox, also part of Maddox’s advisory group.

Eighth-grader Kayla Williams says they’ve received many donations, but could still use more clothes, medical supplies, water, diapers and formula.

Williams says it’s important to help others and work together, because you never know when you might be the one who needs help.

“I hope my students never take for granted the blessings they have and that they always have a heart for service,” says Maddox.

If you would like to donate items to the drive, please bring them to Mr. Maddox's  Middle School classroom in the World Language Building (room number 58) by the end of the day Friday.

UPDATE:

The Benjamin community will continue to collect donations for the Bahamas and Haiti for three more weeks. Did you miss out? Feeling generous? Bring your donations to Mr. Maddox's  Middle School classroom in the World Language Building (room number 58).
