Benjamin Celebrates Halloween Traditions

Marti Lotman
The annual Lower School Halloween Parade, a beloved tradition at Benjamin, was the capstone of an October filled with holiday celebrations.

High School seniors, who have been students at Benjamin since Pre-K, dressed in costume and joined the parade. The “14-year club” members helped the younger students parade around the Kennerly field. The BASH Hospitality Committee sponsored a light breakfast in the Buc Cafe, where parents could be found socializing over a cup of coffee before the parade.

Our smallest Bucs took part in a special parade just for WOW students last Friday. The students, dressed in costumes ranging from Thomas The Tank to the Michelin Man, were led around the quad by their teachers.

Benjamin students and faculty took part in a wide variety of fall traditions, both old and new, this past month. Middle School students celebrated the holiday with their eighth-annual pumpkin decorating contest. First place awards by grade level went to: Mr. Crisafi, Dr. James and Mrs. St. Martin’s advisory groups. The Middle School also hosted a Poetry and Prose night, where students dressed in Halloween costumes and recited a favorite poem or short story.  Over in Mrs. Hogan’s class, students honored All Hallows’ Eve with recitations of Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Nearby, students in Ms. Boykin’s class created pumpkin launchers as part of a STEM project.

The Upper School used the holiday as an opportunity to give back to the community with the second annual Best Buddies Seek N’ Treat. Last Friday, a number of students from the Renaissance Learning Academy joined Upper School students, led by Mrs. Pierman, on a Halloween scavenger hunt around campus.

Lower School students are also using the holiday as a philanthropic opportunity. The students are donating their gently used Halloween costumes to Lake Park Elementary to be used in their performing arts classes.

If you would like to donate a gently used Halloween costume please drop it off in Rooms 21-24 before November 11.
