Upper School Students Honor King's Legacy

On Monday the nation will celebrate the life and legacy of civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. Upper School students, in honor of Dr. King, hosted a special morning assembly Friday in Benjamin Hall.

Aqueria Wester and Keiarra Slack opened the program, led by guidance counselor Ron King, with a beautiful rendition of Sam Cooke’s “A Change Is Gonna Come” set before a backdrop of iconic civil rights protest images. Ainsley Malamala offered a brief history of Dr. King’s legacy of leadership and activism, followed by Breezy Leassear who offered a powerful recitation of King’s Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech.

“After contemplation, I conclude that this award which I receive on behalf of that movement is a profound recognition that nonviolence is the answer to the crucial political and moral question of our time - the need for man to overcome oppression and violence without resorting to violence and oppression. Civilization and violence are antithetical concepts,” Leassear quoted.

The program concluded with Kaylan Arnold, accompanied by Andrew DeFarrari on the piano, singing Nina Simone’s “Feeling Good.”
