Middle School Hosts Eighth Annual Career Day

Head of Middle School Charles Hagy welcomed professionally attired sixth, seventh and eighth graders to Career Day on February 24 in the Barker Performing Arts Center. Career Day coordinator Loretta Corey congratulated the students for their hard work preparing for the day’s events before introducing keynote speaker Dr. Glenda Gunter, an associate professor of technology and learning at the University of Central Florida. Dr. Gunter spoke to students about the role of technology in and outside the classroom.

Alex Kahn, vice president of student council, introduced Josh Fried, who is the head of business development for Waze Carpool, the creators of the Waze app, which is a part of Google. Fried spoke to the middle school students about his career in technology and the aim of the Waze carpool app.

“Our guest speakers Dr. Gunter from UCF and Mr. Fried from Google were outstanding and informative and kept the audience intrigued throughout their presentations,” Corey said of the assembly.

“Student Council did a wonderful job on the opening video and Briley Crisafi closed the assembly with a song to the tune of ‘If I Only Had A Brain.’”

Students partook in individual grade level assignments following the assembly. Sixth graders headed to the gym where they entered a simulated town where a variety of storefronts were conducting a typical day of businesses. The sixth graders applied concepts they learned in an expanded Junior Achievement BizTown curriculum. Each student was given a job or assignment for one of the various BizTown stores, including a McDonald’s, an animal shelter and a bank.

Meanwhile, seventh graders assembled in assigned classrooms where they took part in mock college interview sessions hosted by a Benjamin upper school student interviewer who posed questions to the class in small group sessions. Eighth graders also took part in the mock interview process for internships with local companies.

“What a wonderful opportunity and privilege to work with the students and see how much they can accomplish in two weeks,” Corey said.
