Middle School Hosts Ninth Annual Career Day

Professionally attired middle school students gathered in the Barker Performing Arts Center the morning of December 1 for the ninth annual career day at The Benjamin School coordinated by former Benjamin parent Loretta Corey. Keynote speaker Lauren Berger, “the intern queen,” spoke to sixth, seventh and eighth graders about her experience interning for 15 companies throughout her four years in college.

Berger detailed how she started interning as a freshman for the Zimmerman Agency after googling how to write a resume. Following the internship, Berger traveled to Manhattan for her second internship, but not before being rejected from 114 other opportunities in the City!

“I was rejected 114 times from internships in New York City. Everyone gets rejected. It doesn’t matter where you went to school or what you’re interested in - rejection is something everyone faces, no matter what. But you have to get rejected in order to get to where you want to be,” said Berger.

Berger emphasized the importance of cultivating both personal and professional relationships and staying in contact with those professionals.

Students partook in individual grade level assignments following the assembly. Sixth graders traveled to the gymnasium where they entered a simulated town where a variety of storefronts were conducting business. Each sixth grader was given a job or assignment from one of the stores as part of an expanded Junior Achievement BizTown curriculum.

Meanwhile, seventh graders assembled in assigned classrooms where they took part in mock college interview sessions hosted by a Benjamin upper school student interviewer who posed questions to the class in small group sessions. Eighth graders also took part in the mock interview process for internships with local companies, including Lily Pulitzer and Florida Power and Light.
