Holiday Cheer Abounds At Benjamin

Benjamin students and faculty have been making spirits bright this holiday season with a host of community service initiatives and school activities.

The lower school faculty and middle school advisory groups spread Christmas cheer to the staff at the VA hospital with handmade gingerbread houses, wreaths and festive holiday placemats.

“What fun it was to deliver these thoughtful gifts, knowing the pleasure they will bring to those who have served our country and defended our freedom,” said Director of Student Services Susan Poncy.

Lower and middle school students also collected 580 toys for children in the Middle Keys who were affected by Hurricane Irma. The community service initiative, spearheaded by the lower school student council, was conducted through the Mile Marker 50 Relief Project in partnership with Operation Safe Shelter, Inc. Poncy said there was such an influx of toys that she had to run across the street to Enterprise to rent a second car to transport the gifts!

The second grade embarked on a magical journey to the North Pole during their annual “Polar Express” morning. The students, dressed in their pajamas, had their Polar Express tickets stamped by conductor Mr. Goldberg before heading into the Barker Performing Arts Center to enjoy the movie.

The Kindergarten class delighted an audience of parents, grandparents, friends and faculty during their annual Holiday Program. This year’s “December Lights, December Nights” theme featured vocal pieces that celebrated various world traditions including Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and Christmas.

Benjamin school musicians and vocalists captivated the TBS community during the Winter Music Festival presented in Benjamin Hall the night of December 8.

The fine arts students entertained a full house of parents, grandparents and friends with an exciting mix of vocal and instrumental pieces. The Middle School Musical Theatre Chorus, directed by Andrew Winters and Bob Bayless, treated the audience to a wide range of pieces including The Hanukkah Song and Zoot Suit Santa.

The Upper School also hosted a Holiday Assembly in Benjamin Hall featuring performing arts students and both faculty and student speakers who shared their Christmas, Hannukah and Kwanzaa traditions. Please enjoy the whole performance below!
