Head of School Search

Search Committee Update 2/27/19

Dear Benjamin School Family and Friends,
As you all know, over the past 18 months, Bob Goldberg, our Head of School, has been fighting tirelessly against his illness. Bob’s determination over this period has been unparalleled considering the obstacles he has been facing. His intent had been to continue through the next school year when he would retire and a new Head of School would be appointed. However, Bob has determined that he needs to focus solely on his health and must step down as Head of School effective immediately. On behalf of the Board of Trustees of the School as well as its faculty, staff, parents and broader community of TBS, I wish Bob only the best as he continues his battle.
From a School leadership perspective, plans are in place for this transition. The School is actively engaged in its Head of School search process alongside its nationally-recognized search consultants, Carney Sandoe & Associates. The consultants are assisting the School to identify and recruit an Interim Head of School that can help provide the guidance and transition needed for the 2019-2020 academic school year until the new, permanent Head of School begins. The Head of School search process requires this period of time so that the School has access to the largest candidate pool for the position. Interested candidates generally require a full year to provide notice to their respective employers.
The Interim Head of School search will follow a similar, but expedited, process that we are using currently. It will be inclusive and faculty, staff and parent representatives will be involved. We fully expect the Interim Head of School to be in place prior to the start of next School year. Until then, the School will look to our extremely capable and experienced Division Heads, Kristen Sheehan, Chuck Hagy and Fletcher Carr, as well as our Chief Operating Officer, Leslie Downs, to operate its day to day activities.
Bob has provided his leadership to TBS for 11 years, and the School and everyone that he has engaged with is better for his involvement. I thank you Bob for all your dedication, drive and passion for TBS and its community. Over the next few weeks, we will communicate ways for us to join together as a community and show Bob our support and affection. In the meantime, I know the entire TBS community joins me and the Board of Trustees in sending our thoughts and best wishes to Bob and his family.
Ari Zur
Chairman, Board of Trustees

January 17, 2019

Dear Members of The Benjamin School Community,

On December 6, Bob Goldberg announced he would be retiring as the Head of School after the 2019-2020 academic school year.  As Ari Zur, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, said in his letter to the Benjamin Community, we feel such gratitude to Bob for all the time and effort he has put into The Benjamin School and the accomplishments he has achieved on the School’s behalf.

Bob’s leadership and genuine devotion to the School will be hard to replace. However, as we start the Head of School search process we are confident that The Benjamin School’s outstanding national reputation will attract the finest candidates who can build on our strong foundation and continue to advance our school in the years to come.

The Board of Trustees has assembled a Head of School Search Committee made up of individuals with a wealth of knowledge about the School who will do an excellent job overseeing the process. The committee includes:

Jill Fried, Search Committee Co-Chair, Board Vice Chair, P ’18, P ’21
Kelly Perkins, Search Committee Co-Chair, Board Treasurer, P '26, P ’32
Ari Zur, Board Chair, P ’21, P ’22, P ’26
Ray Graziotto, Former Board Chair, P ’18, P ’21
Lynda Jacobs, Trustee, P ’17 (2), P ’24
Darren Lowe, Trustee, P ’28, P ’31
Jack Nicklaus II ’80, Former Trustee, P ’08, P ’11, P ’13, P ’15, P ’18
Tom Rooney ’89, Trustee, P ’20, P ’22, P ’25
John Thomas, Former Board Chair, P ’96, P ’98
Joe Zaluski, Former Trustee, Head of School - Gulf Stream School
Amy Zito, Trustee, P ’25, P ’29
We have asked Bob to serve as an advisor to the Search Committee to assist with guidance along the way, including the preparation for the transition the following school year.

In the next few weeks, the Search Committee (including members of the Board of Trustees) will be interviewing several nationally renowned educational executive search firms, and we will select one to assist us with the search process.

As searching for a new Head of School is not a new endeavor, there will be clear steps to the process. We will include as many community members in the process as possible to allow for your ideas and thoughts to be heard and incorporated in the selection of TBS’ next Head of School. Although there may be some aspects of the search that will need to remain confidential in order to protect candidates’ identities and current positions, we want to assure you that the process will be transparent. To keep everyone updated and informed, we will be revising this webpage on a continual basis with our progress and other relevant information. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at headsearch@thebenjaminschool.org.
