College Counseling Hosts ‘Case Study’ Night With Admissions Reps

The junior class and their parents enjoyed a unique program coordinated by the college counseling office the evening of January 31. College Admissions Officers from Brown University, Emory University, the University of Michigan and the University of Miami traveled to the Benjamin Upper School where they conducted case studies with students in Benjamin Hall.

“The evening was an important opportunity for students to receive hands on advice from individuals who are experts in the field of college admissions,” said Director of College Counseling Anna Wright.

Juniors and their parents enjoyed the evening reception, where they had the opportunity to speak with admissions officers. The students broke into groups and analyzed mock admissions applications, deciding the fates of applicants. The university representatives then discussed the student’s assumptions and whether their decisions would have been the same or different in the admissions process.

Ana Saul-Sykes, an admissions representative from Brown University, also spent time with the Freshman and Sophomore class and their parents. Sykes explained how the underclassmen could begin their college process by getting to know their counselors and becoming involved in the school.

“We were lucky to be able to take advantage of her 20 plus years of experience in the field. She talked to students about the importance of challenging themselves, getting to know teachers and counselors, leaving a footprint and being involved in the Benjamin community. This could come in a variety of different forms and quality is more important than quantity,” Wright said.

Wright and her team also met with the Freshman Class to introduce them to the college counseling process and the tools available in Naviance. They will be meeting with the 10th Grade on February 11.
