STEM Center Foreman: Building On Track To Open In May

Steve Parkman, AMC Construction Superintendent for The Maglio Family STEM Center, says the world-class facility is on track to open this May. Parkman says the School has been great to work with throughout the process, which has made the project that much more exciting for him and his team.

“From maintenance, to technology, to the fundraising team, everyone has helped move this project along,” Parkman says.

Here’s a quick Q&A between Chief Development Officer Juan Carlos Fanjul ‘93 and Parkman regarding the latest building updates.

Q: Why did you choose this project over other opportunities?
A: “This would mean more to more people over a number of years after I’m gone. More than a commercial building. So that was the draw for me.”

Q: Education seems like something that appealed to you as well…
A: “Well, it’s going to mean more to the kids because it’s an educational facility rather than just a standard commercial building.”

Q: What have been some of the challenges here?
A: “Logistics and conditions. We had to get everything cleared out so we could build and then were constantly finding something else and having to work around that. We found old water lines, old communications wires, multiple irrigation lines . . . it was always a process to eliminate possible troubles.”

Q: What’s the most interesting feature of the building to you?
A: “The bridge. It ties the new building to the existing. Plus, it was difficult to put in. There’s a lot of sweat equity making that bridge. That bridge was incredibly challenging to get in because of working next to the existing building. That was all hand excavated up there because we didn’t know what existing utilities might be in the way.”

Q: What do you want students twenty years from now to know about this building?
A: “That you don’t get to see the sweat equity that went into it when you look at the finished project. Take care of it.”
