Benjamin Students Take Home Speech & Debate Awards

The Upper School Speech and Debate Team earned high honors in the Florida Forensics League’s State Championship Tournament the weekend of March 2. The weekend tournament featured Florida’s best speech and debate teams, with nearly 600 students from 63 schools of all sizes competing across several disciplines.

Juniors Alicia Liu, Caroline Moody and Sophomore Michael Scellato represented Benjamin in four disciplines during the regional tournament.

Alicia Liu competed in the International Extemporaneous Speaking event, earning an average of 94.8 out of 100 over five rounds for each of her addresses. She ended the day ranked 25th in the State.

Junior Caroline Moody placed 12th in the Original Oratory event and 3rd in the Impromptu event. She earned an average score of 96/8 out of 100 over five rounds.

Sophomore Michael Scellato competed in the Lincoln-Douglas Debate, qualifying for Octa-finals and ending the day ranked 14th in the State. Michael also took home an award for 2nd highest-scored speaker in the tournament.
