Libraries & Media Centers

The Benjamin School has a library on each campus. The Lower/Middle School Library serves to encourage a love of reading, and supports children's evolving interest in and ability to do research. By the time students reach our Upper School Campus and the Kirkwood Library, they are skilled in using library and research materials as they access the latest technology to participate in the global, online community as responsible information users.

Lower/Middle School

From the "Story Cottage" for our youngest students to the computer stations, and digital card catalog that serve our researchers in grades 3-8, the Lower/Middle School Library is a welcoming and inspiring experience for our students. Our goal is to provide a quiet space for reading, independent study, research, and learning.

In the lower grades, children are taught the basic skills of library organization, the Dewey Decimal System, using computers wisely for reports and projects, and using the digital catalog to find resources on the shelves. Students in grades Pre-K through 3 participate in the Florida Children's Book Award Program with a reading incentive curriculum that encourages children to read at home each night. At the end of the year, top readers and top classes receive a special treat!

Middle School students visit the library with their classes or on their own for independent research using web links and printed materials. By encouraging good academic standards, we know that they are ready to enter Upper School with a strong background in research methods, documentation, and an understanding of library materials. The library has 12 touch-screen computers, a portable SmartBoard and student-friendly weblinks on the library website.

Upper School Kirkwood

The Kirkwood Library is housed on the Upper School Campus. It has responded to the growth in information technology with instruction in information literacy skills necessary to function in our high-tech, wireless environment and provides all users access to information through the latest emerging technologies. We encourage reading for pleasure and knowledge, and provide a welcoming environment for study and relaxation.

The library's collection consists of over 7,000 volumes, 21 electronic databases, a curriculum- based collection of video, DVD and audio selections and an interest-driven professional collection for faculty, staff and parents. Although all of our students have laptops, there are 4 networked workstations and a scanner available in the library, which features seating for 48, two study rooms, and a small conference room. In addition, two comfortable reading areas overlook the lake.
