Kravis Center Performs 'Taken Away' For Middle School

Kravis-On-The-Road travelled to the Barker Performing Arts Center to perform the live theatrical production Taken Away. The hour long performance is set in 1930s Germany before the start of World War II. Twelve-year-old Elfie Hoffman has noticed that things around her have begun to change, but she doesn’t think the changes will affect her. Until they do.

“Viewing Taken Away offered one more experience that enhances the middle school humanities curriculum, which includes the reading and study of the book Anne Frank’s The Diary of a Young Girl in Grade 6, and further Holocaust studies in grades 7 and 8.  Most importantly, the play’s focus on the lessons of the Holocaust allowed students and teachers time to refocus on our work to build a school culture emphasizing kindness, empathy and advocacy among our students, while working to decrease hate and bias as much as possible in our community,” said Head of Middle School Chuck Hagy.

The performance was followed by a conversation led by Mr. Hagy and middle school teacher Mrs. Franzen that unpacked what the students learned through the play and in their History and English classes.

“Equally important was the chance to once again explore how we should treat and take care of others, again affirming what the students are being taught through the school’s ongoing ADL trainings and ‘No Place for Hate’ initiatives,” said Hagy.
