Middle School Coding Team Ranked #1 In Nation

The Middle School’s CoderZ coding team is currently ranked number one in the nation in its first year participating in the coding tournament. Faculty sponsor Stephanie Oster says 14 states and 25 schools are represented in the virtual tournament that includes block coding and reading javascript.

Oster explains that the scrimmage rounds have concluded and the team will now compete in a qualifying round.

“All of the middle school science classes use the CoderZ curriculum during designated class time. The coding program is a new addition to the middle school curriculum and is part of our ongoing STEM initiative,” says Oster.

Oster says the best part of the tournament is watching her students help one another.

“The beautiful part is they’re helping each other. There’s kindness, empathy, good sportsmanship in helping each other out. It’s not rare that someone will come in and volunteer to help another student who may be struggling because they know they’re competing as one team and one school. It’s a nice thing to be seeing,” Oster says.

Oster says the three top students from Benjamin are girls. Her future goal for the program is to become a recognized chapter of the non-profit organization Girls Who Code.
