US Marks Holocaust Remembrance Day With Special Assembly

Upper School students marked International Holocaust Remembrance Day with a moving assembly in Benjamin Hall.

Senior Ben Lesserson shared memories of his summer trip to Europe, including his experience visiting Auschwitz. Lesserson recalled the torture the Jewish people endured at the hands of the Nazis and the relief he felt being able to walk out of the concentration camp.

Senior Sam Fox spoke about World War II and the Holocaust before turning the program over to Ballet Palm Beach, who performed the contemporary piece “The List,” about the horrors a young Jewish family faced during World War II.

The piece, choreographed by Christopher L. Huggins, follows the emotional and physical struggles of the family as they find out they are soon to be sent to their deaths.

US Performing Arts Chair Sara Salivar says Benjamin has had a long relationship with Ballet Palm Beach, including collaboration with founder Colleen Smith on a variety of projects. Salivar says she was especially moved by “The List.”

International Holocaust Remembrance Day is held every year on January 27. The date marks the 74th anniversary of the Allied liberation of the Auschwitz death camp. An estimated 1.1 million people died at the camp in Nazi-occupied Poland.
