Benjamin Middle School Students Named DAR Essay Contest Winners

Seventh grade student Luca Balzano won first place in the Daughters of the American Revolution annual essay contest. Balzano placed first in the Palm Beach chapter’s contest with his essay on the Women’s Suffrage Movement. He then advanced to the state-wide competition where he placed first a second time!

Sixth grade student Hannah Soffan placed 2nd locally, along Seventh grade student Wilson Stewart. Seventh grader Adeline Vining won 3rd place overall.

This year’s prompt focused on the 19th Amendment and its impact on Americans politically and socially. Middle School English teacher Chrissie Ferguson said students could write from any perspective as they stepped into the shoes of someone during that time period.

Ferguson said some of her students chose the perspective of husband or son while others chose the perspective of working women.

This is the first time a student from Benjamin has won the statewide title.
