Middle School Hosts Annual Career Day

Benjamin middle school students gathered in the Barker Performing Arts Center the morning of February 22 for the eleventh annual career day at The Benjamin School coordinated by Middle School Academic Dean Chuck Maddox.

“Career Day exposes students to a wide variety of career choices as well as ways to impact their community,” said Maddox.

Keynote speaker Juan Carlos Fanjul ‘93 spoke to the middle school about his career in television news. Fanjul detailed how his career began with his senior internship at a local news station and skyrocketed from there.

Following the assembly, students partook in individual grade level assignments. Sixth graders enjoyed a simulated town called “BizTown” where a variety of storefronts were conducting business. Each student was given a job or assignment in the town as part of an expanded Junior Achievement curriculum.

Meanwhile, seventh and eighth grade students assembled in assigned classrooms where they took part in a mock interview process. Chief Financial Officer Leslie Downs, Realtor Vince Marotta and Dr. Heather Yeckes Rodin served as volunteer interviewees.

“We loved partnering with business professionals from our community for this year’s career day. The students absorbed a lot about business from this hands-on learning experience,” said Maddox.
