STEM Center Grand Opening Marked By Excitement, Gratitude

Chief Development Officer Juan Carlos Fanjul ‘93 welcomed over 300 guests on August 11 to the historic grand opening of the Maglio Family STEM Center. Fanjul said the project had been four years in the making as part of the School’s “Leaps and Bounds” Capital Campaign.

“As you know, gratitude is one of our Benjamin values - and the School is certainly grateful for Benjamin grandparents Bill and Madeline Maglio who provided the lead gift for this project,” said Fanjul.

The 13,000 square-foot facility is the largest dedicated STEM center in South Florida for students as young as 3 years old.

Attendees heard remarks from Interim Head of School, Mr. Tom Reid, Michelle Grande, representing the Maglio Family, and rising 8th grade student, Michael Louis.

According to Louis, the building is “unique, inclusive, and mind boggling.”

Louis addressed the audience about his time at Benjamin and how excited he was to experience the new STEM Center with the entire middle school.

“At the end of 5th grade, my parents and I decided a positive academic change was needed, and that positivity was here at The Benjamin School,” said Louis.

He said the creation of the STEM Center was further evidence for he and his family that they had made the right move.

Michelle Grande, speaking on behalf of the Maglio Family, thanked her parents for their commitment to quality education.

The program concluded with all major donors making their way to the front of the stage for a ceremonial ribbon cutting followed by applause and bursts of orange and blue confetti. Parents, students, grandparents, and friends then had the chance to tour the facility, visiting each of the new classrooms and interacting with the new technology.

Thank you to all the major donors who made the STEM Center Possible!
