ADL Facilitates Bullying Prevention Seminars for Middle School
Middle School students and teachers partook in grade-level bullying prevention assemblies the morning of January 16 as part of a continued partnership with the Anti-Defamation League.
Facilitators from the ADL of Florida worked with students and teachers on ways to increase kindness, advocacy, and empathy among the student body.
ADL facilitators Doug Cureton and Artie Jamison spoke with sixth graders regarding the roles we play in the bullying process, how our behaviors affect others, and how to be effective advocates.
The seventh grade focused on how to develop an appropriate digital footprint and how to be an advocate for others both on and off-line. Eighth grade students continued their work exploring the impact of implicit and explicit bias and microaggressions.
Head of Middle School Chuck Hagy said the undercurrent of all the workshops is building empathy while reinforcing the Middle School’s commitment to being a community of empathy and acceptance.
“Teachers have had training in developing the most inclusive and positive classrooms possible. This inclusivity is a key to building empathy and promoting kindness and advocacy both on and off campus,” said Hagy.
Hagy said the Middle School also surveys students each year to make sure the school culture remains as positive as possible.
“We've embedded anti-bias and bullying curricula in our history scope and sequences. This also includes our Holocaust Studies Program in grades 6-8. Our goals are to reduce bias and anti-semitism, hate, and bullying in our community by promoting empathy, kindness, and advocacy for others.”
