Middle School Coding Team Places At CoderZ

Corey Morrow
Four female members of the middle school coding team, the Binary Bucs, took home the second place prize in the Atlantic Regionals portion of the CoderZ Cyber Robotics Coding Competition (CRCC). Addie Vining, Hanna Soffan, Vanessa Zito, and Alexandra Pace accompanied their advisor and Science Department Chair, Mrs. Stephanie Oster, to Virginia Commonwealth University to compete in this year’s CoderZ. CoderZ is a digital learning environment where students worldwide learn STEM by coding virtual 3D robots and competing in the CRCC Robotics Competition. This is only the second year the Binary Bucs have competed, and they followed last year’s win with incredible top two placement.

Aside from winning as an all female team, the Binary Bucs turned heads at the competition by working collaboratively. Their team motto, “no one codes alone”, was unique in the usually solo world of competitive coding. Their competition included 30 assigned “missions”. The team strategized to complete the tasks they found easiest first, rather than completing them in order, another unique trait to their coding strategy. Proud teacher and team advisor Mrs. Oster said, “Our students jumped on board and went full out”.
