Newspaper Staff Hosts Workshop

Alicia Liu, Student Intern
The 4th grade students and their teachers traveled to the Upper School on March 12 to attend a journalism workshop held by the Upper School newspaper The Pharcyde.

In Benjamin Hall, the students received a warm welcome from The Pharcyde advisor, Mr. Ken Didsbury, and the staff. The Pharcyde editors introduced themselves and talked about their jobs and responsibilities. In a presentation given by Mr. Didsbury, the 4th grade students were introduced to the methods of building the structure for an article, the different categories of articles, and the typical development cycle of a newspaper. These were combined with the examples of articles published in the lastest Pharcyde issue.

After the lecture, the 4th grade students were divided into groups to develop their own article ideas with help from The Pharcyde staff. These ideas were eventually presented at the end of the workshop.

Mr. Didsbury hopes that this workshop can help the students to develop a better appreciation for good writing and the skills to improve their own. “I loved this class visit. My writers rose to the occasion and shared their enthusiasm for writing with the younger students. In turn, the Lower School students readily engaged in the process and came up with some very creative ideas. When they left, their teachers talked about turning the exercise into a real 4th grade newspaper.  It is wonderful to see students in two divisions have such fun together.”
