Lower and Middle School Library Renovation Underway

A top to bottom renovation is underway at the Lower and Middle school library. Anticipation is mounting for the grand opening, which is scheduled for the 2020-2021 school year.

Chief Development Officer Juan Carlos Fanjul ‘93 said construction has begun on the back room and storage area, and windows that have been covered up for years have been reopened. Drywall and ceiling tiles will be installed next before the construction crew moves on to the renovation of the main library area. Fanjul said the space will feature all-new carpeting, lighting fixtures, paint, and modern furniture which is expected to arrive the first week of August.

“Head Librarian Danielle Wishka has done a tremendous job in re-imagining this space and making it suitable for today's students,” said Fanjul. “We will keep a robust book catalogue, but we will also be adding several new spaces where students can meet in person or virtually. One of the most dynamic aspects is the new TEDx-style stage where students can make presentations to their classmates who will be arranged in stadium-style seating. In addition, the ergonomic furniture will provide for comfortable and inviting spaces that will help enhance learning outside of the classroom.”

Students on the lower and middle school campus will still be able to check out a wide range of books and continue to enjoy weekly story time. This tradition, inspired by Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin’s love for reading and recognition of its importance, will continue in the 21st century space.

Fanjul said $200,000 of the $380,000 project has already been raised.

“While the School is committed to making up most of the shortfall, we still need to raise funds to ensure the project reaches its full potential. For those families that are interested in investing in this project, please don't hesitate to reach out to me as there are several naming opportunities available,” said Fanjul.
