Senior Student-Athlete Horgen Interviewed By NFHS Network

Senior student-athlete Emily Horgen, who will continue her career at Yale University in the Fall, was interviewed by the NFHS network after being named to The Florida Dairy Farmers Academic All-State Team. The team recognizes 24 seniors from across the state of Florida who have made outstanding accomplishments in both athletics in academics.

Horgen, a three-sport varsity athlete, who graduates with a 4.0 GPA, spoke with NFHS network’s Marty Pallman about her high school experience and what it was like to be a student-athlete.

“I think i’ve learned so much from my involvement in sports . . . the biggest thing I think I took away is that sports are a really great way to make connections with people,” Horgen told Pallman. “I love the camaraderie that sports provided me over the years. I’ve learned some great life lessons through sports that I will take with me to college and beyond.”

Horgen was also honored for her academic achievements, including a children’s book she authored and illustrated titled Lee The Sea Turtle Swims Free. The impetus for the book followed Horgen’s internship at Loggerhead Marinelife Center where she studied sea turtle conservation.

“I’ve been studying chinese for eight years and wanted to find a way to use my specific skill set with Chinese and somehow combine that with sea turtle conservation,” said Horgen. After researching different areas in China, Horgen found that certain provinces poached turtles for their meat and shells.

“I wrote and illustrated this book to send to China and to distribute in South Florida to spread awareness about how children of any age can help protect sea turtles and marine wildlife,” said Horgen.

Although she is excited to return to the Northeast for college, Horgen says she is “more than a little bit sad” to be leaving south Florida where she can train outside year round.
