Senior Scellato Wins Prestigious National Debate Award

Senior Michael Scellato was recognized by the National Speech and Debate Association with the prestigious Academic All American Award.

The high honor, awarded to fewer than 1 percent of students, recognizes academic rigor, competitive speech and debate success, and personal excellence. The accomplishment places Scellato among an elite group of Speech and Debate students across the country.

“Michael has represented our team and our school well in a variety of speech and debate events, and he is an active participant in other speech related courses and activities, including our Law elective and our Junior Statesmen of America chapter,” said advisor Dr. John Peruggia.

Peruggia said the award was a well deserved honor for Michael, who is Benjamin’s first Academic All-American honoree.

“Michael set a goal for himself to earn AAA this year and he accomplished that with hard work, dedication, and a strong sense of self. I continue to be proud of his achievements and thankful for the impact he has had on our ever-maturing Speech and Debate team,” said Peruggia.

The award recognizes students who have completed at least five semesters of debate in high school, earned the degree of Superior Distinction in the Association’s Honor Society, achieved rigorous criteria for GPA and demonstrated outstanding character and leadership.
