Middle, Upper School Welcome Students Back To Campus

The energy and excitement were palpable as middle and upper school students streamed back on to campus the morning of August 31. Students who elected in-person instruction were warmly welcomed back to both campuses for the first time since March.

The Middle School faculty and staff welcomed close to 200 of their students back to campus. Head of Middle School Chuck Hagy said one of his primary focuses will be continuing to help students feel as comfortable as possible during this second transition to a new school environment by working to lower anxiety, continuing to build community, encouraging positive thinking, and promoting acts of kindness.

“Though students won't be able to see our smiles through our face coverings, they will hear enthusiasm in our voices and see the joy in our eyes,” said Hagy.

The Upper School, helmed by Fletcher Carr, was abuzz with excitement as students and faculty reconnected with peers they had not seen since the Spring. Carr praised the faculty and staff who have seamlessly adjusted to an unprecedented learning environment as they work to balance in-person and online learning simultaneously.

“Melding these two modes of teaching into consistently creative, engaging, and meaningful lessons is a noteworthy feat at any time; to do so during this incredibly difficult period is the mark of a uniquely talented collection of scholars and educators,” said Carr.

Carr, in a back to school note to families, acknowledged that many of the new health and safety steps may feel foreign at first, but are all part of a surmountable learning curve.

“Soon enough, these daily practices will seem like nothing more than familiar steps toward the next normal. And through it all, I am confident that all members of the community will continue to support one another in the knowledge that, together, we are creating the safest, healthiest, and best educational experience possible for our students here at The Benjamin School,” wrote Carr.
