US THESPIANS PRODUCE SCHOOL'S FIRST MAJOR MOTION PICTURE
Despite theatres across the country going dark amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the virus has not been able to dim the spirits of upper school thespians at The Benjamin School.Upper School Director Of Theatre Jason Peck began brainstorming a “plan b” when it became evident this summer that he would not be able to have an in-person audience for the School’s theatrical production this Fall.
“My mind kicked into overdrive as to what we would be able to do with our Benjamin School thespians,” said Peck.
A number of Peck’s theatre colleagues from other schools were going the live video conferencing route where actors would either perform their work on stage or in their own home and then broadcast it out to the community.
“For some reason that didn’t appeal to me,” Peck said. Instead, Peck decided to pivot and make a feature film with his students.
“The Benjamin School has state of the art media equipment. This has allowed for collaborative opportunities with our award-winning Media Production Department and has led to students who might not have otherwise participated coming out and making ‘movie magic,’” he said.
Peck and his students tackled the feature film She Kills Monsters by Qui Nguyen. The film follows two estranged sisters in high school who find an unlikely connection in the fantasy world of Dungeons and Dragons.
Members of the Benjamin community are invited to attend a “Drive-In” screening of the film on Friday, November 13 at 7:00 p.m. Admission is $10 per vehicle.
