National Honor Society Welcomes 7 New Members

The Benjamin School chapter of the National Honor Society welcomed seven new members and two transfer members during a virtual induction ceremony the morning of November 17. The celebration, like much in the COVID-era, was adapted for a virtual audience.

“There are many things we have learned this past year and one of those things is that we are all adaptable,” said NHS Chapter Advisor and History Department Chair Sara Misselhorn ‘90. “We adapted to virtual school, we adapted in our sports, and the drama department adapted in a very cool way to give us a production on the big screen last Friday. So what you will hear is how these inductees have adapted and thrived in the environment we know as 2020.”

Inductees were recognized and celebrated for their academic excellence, character, and service to others.

“The work that those members of NHS have done and the society’s goals are in perfect alignment with The Benjamin School and represent the founding characteristics that the Benjamins so much believed in,” said Head of School Dave Faus in opening remarks.

Senior inductees Cade Odom, Aaryan Sommader, Gwen Savidge, Bradley Groffman, Steven Gu, Aidan Le, Sam Ende, along with transfers Reagan Rodriguez and Jack Regnery, were celebrated for upholding the four pillars of NHS: Leadership, Character, Scholarship and Service, in spite of the pandemic.

Among their remarkable achievements: a sock collection for the homeless, and co-authoring research with a Brown University professor on the single-payer healthcare system.

NHS President Alex Michelon spoke to the virtual audience and inductees on-stage about the unexpected year they had all faced.

“That’s a great way to sum up this year - unexpected,” said Michelon. “None of the seniors last year expected to have their final memories on Zoom. None of us expected to be streaming this induction. None of us expected to be fighting this virus through July, let alone November . . . Even though our voices may be muffled by the masks we wear today, let yours echo through by making a difference at your school, in your community, and in the world beyond.”
