College Counseling Team Meets With 8th Grade Students

The Upper School college counseling team met virtually with 8th grade advisory groups the week of November 16 to introduce themselves and lay the foundation for the college process beginning in 9th grade.

Associate Director of College Counseling Bekka Goldberg spoke with Mrs. Devine’s advisory group about the arc of education available to them beyond Benjamin. She highlighted the diversity of college and university options available to students and the differences between various degrees.

“What that means is, there’s something out there for everyone,” said Goldberg. She emphasized that the college process and life after Benjamin is not a one-size-fits-all scenario.

She encouraged students to develop strong study skills, focus on their academics, and find activities that make them happy. Passion, she said, is contagious. Goldberg spoke to the importance of character, kindness, and passion about activities outside the classroom.

“We see our roles as much more than just helping you fill out your applications and getting into college,” said Goldberg. “We think of this as a whole-person education. We do a lot of work with character, which will build on everything you have already learned in the middle school.”

Goldberg outlined the advantages of applying to college from The Benjamin School, and the opportunities students had to form relationships with teachers who truly care about their individual success.

“You all have wonderful ideas in your hearts and various passions and we are excited to support you at the upper school when you arrive here,” said Goldberg.
