Senior Creates 'Sweet Spot' App To Manage Diabetes

Rising senior Jake Zur has found “the sweet spot” when it comes to managing his recently diagnosed Type 1 Diabetes.

“In order to stabilize my sugars and start to get control of my condition, my doctors had me doing a lot of calculations and carb/insulin management on paper worksheets. The whole process was overwhelming, stressful, and messy,” said Zur of the challenges surrounding his diagnosis.

Zur, who says he has always loved computer science, took matters into his own hands.

“I was working with Alex Michelon ‘21 on another app that we were hired to build, and we thought why don’t we try and make something that does what the worksheets are doing,” said Zur.

And necessity, as the saying goes, became the mother of invention. After four months of work and consultation with his endocrinologist, the “SweetSpot - The Diabetes Manager” app was created. The free download, which is useful for anyone who is insulin dependent, is just two weeks old and already has 135 users.

Zur said the app took four months to code and a month to get approved by Apple. He hopes it serves as a helpful tool for other diabetics who may not be able to afford more costly monitoring systems.
