US Chinese Teacher Presents Mindfulness Lecture

Upper school world language teacher Lei Cohen recently led a 3-hour workshop about incorporating mindfulness into world language instruction during the Florida Foreign Language Association 2021 Conference in Jacksonville, Florida.

Cohen told fellow world language attendees that mindfulness is a skill that can be learned through practices like yoga and meditation.

“Mindfulness is an art to allow administrators, teachers, and students to pause, look inwards, rewind, rest, rejuvenate, rebound, watch our breathing and mind so we can handle our daily lives with a peaceful mind,” said Cohen.

Cohen said we are living in an unprecedented time in which we have seen rising levels of depression, stress, anxiety, and learning disabilities in schools.

“It is high time to introduce mindfulness to educational institutes,” she said.

Cohen explained the need for mindfulness in classrooms, citing statistics regarding adolescent mental health and disordered thinking. She led attendees through a mindfulness exercise and offered helpful meditation postures and yoga positions.

She encouraged teachers to incorporate mindfulness into their own lives and offered them an evening mindfulness meditation that included guided imagery and, music, and intentional breathing.

She incorporated gratitude games and lists into her workshop along with sun salutations and guided meditations.
