Boys Track Team Wins State Championship

The Benjamin boys track and field team won the 2022 FHSAA State Championship for the first time in the School’s history. The team finished with 65 points at the Class 1A state championships at James G. Pressley Stadium in Gainesville, Florida.

Junior Mica Mays brought home state titles in the 400-meter dash and the triple jump. Senior C.J. Bowens cruised to first place victory in discus and the 4X100-meter relay team finished as state runner-up.

Athletic Director Ryan Smith '93 said the school is tremendously proud of the team for their "complete team effort" to win the state championship.

"Every student-athlete that participated in the meet was able to contribute to the victory. It was such an incredible and exciting night highlighted by Micah Mays and CJ Bowens winning individual state titles in their events," said Smith.

"The team achieved as the highest level this year winning the district championship and becoming the first track and field team to win the county meet, regional meet and state championship," he said.

The team added to their medal count with Jacob Cosby-Mosley’s third-place finish in the triple jump, Broderick Quinn’s third-place finish in the javelin and Micah Mays’ third-place finish in the high jump. Robert Letsche won fifth-place in pole vault and Jack Hamilton placed seventh in discus.

Coach Barret Saunders ‘03, a member of the school's Athletic Hall of Fame and previous individual state champion in the long jump and triple jump, helped shepherd the boys to the State title along with an outstanding group of assistant coaches.
