Spelling Bee Champion Advances To Regional Competition

Fifth grader Linden Costa was named the lower school spelling bee champion during the annual bee in The Barker Center the morning of January 12. Fellow fifth grader Harper Eggleton was named the runner-up.

This year’s annual competition featured 16 fourth and fifth grade spellers who had all won their classroom bees. Chief Development Officer Juan Carlos Fanjul ‘93 served as the pronouncer, flanked by lower school teachers Mrs. Hogan, Ms. Bear, and librarian Mrs. Griffis who served as judges.

“The annual Lower School spelling bee is always exciting for our upper elementary students,” said Head of School Dr. Kristen Sheehan.

“Besides being a fantastic opportunity to showcase our best spellers and compete in a supportive environment, the students also get the chance to display their self-confidence, communication and public speaking skills, and their ability to thrive under pressure,” said Sheehan.

Head of School Mr. Dave Faus praised all the spellers for their confidence and poise before presenting the winner with a trophy.

Costa will now compete in the Regional Bee in February.
