Middle School Receives ‘No Place For Hate’ Status

The Benjamin Middle School has received a “no place for hate” designation for the fifth year in a row. The designation, created by the Anti-Defamation League, is symbolic of the work the middle school does to establish an inclusive and safe community for its students.

“The five-year banner is an achievement that we are very proud of. However, our work is far from finished. Our goals in the middle school continue to be to increase advocacy, empathy and kindness among our students while decreasing bias in our community,” said Head of Middle School Chuck Hagy.

“Students need to understand how their actions affect others. We want students to get to know the other children around them so they can be more empathetic classmates, to remember that no act of kindness for others is too small and to be hopeful that they, through their attitudes and actions, can make a positive difference in community.”

According to the ADL, the “No Place For Hate” program is intended to accomplish the following goals:

  • Building inclusive and safe communities in which respect is the goal, and all students can thrive
  • Empowering students, faculty, administration and family members to take a stand against hate and bullying by incorporating new and existing programs under one powerful message
  • Engaging schools and communities in at least three anti-bias activities per year, which ADL helps to develop
  • Sending a clear, unified message that all students have a place to belong
