Brent Craft '04 Makes Feature Film 'Lady-Like'

Brent Craft ‘04 says the feeling of making someone laugh is what originally drew him to the film industry. He hopes his film “Lady-Like,” a comedy about two best friends in college and what happens when a relationship comes in the way of that friendship, will leave the audience with the satisfaction of a good laugh. Craft says the characters, humor and plot are inspired by a group of female friends he had in college who lived next door in a three-story townhouse.

“I had a group of girlfriends in college that I found very funny and I felt like I hadn't, especially at the time, seen them portrayed on screen. I wrote a couple scenes based upon their humor and sensibilities,” Craft says.

Craft says producing his project hasn’t been without challenges. Among them: casting without a casting director (for a portion of the roles), shooting during a heat wave, navigating the distribution process and trying to deliver something great with very limited resources. Craft’s filmmaking chops were first honed at Benjamin, where he had his first computer editing classes in his Video Production classes.

“I edited everything from comedy skits to my basketball highlight tapes and it's where I discovered that I had a decent knack for stitching things together,” he says.

In an industry that’s incredibly difficult to break into and often slim on opportunity, Craft says it’s important to push forward regardless.

“The idea of someone recognizing your talent and giving you the opportunity to have a career exists to an even lesser degree than we'd like to imagine. If this is something you believe you should be doing, don't wait for someone to agree.”

Alums Cloe Mimum ‘08 and Cody Travaglini ‘04 were involved in the creation of “Lady Like.” Mimum ran the social media accounts for “Lady Like” during its inception and helped get the project off the ground while Travaglini ‘04 provided music oversight.
You can view “Lady-Like” on iTunes, Amazon, GooglePlay, Microsoft Movies (Xbox), Playstation Video and a variety of Cable On-Demand platforms.
