Turtle Tracking

Squirtle The Turtle

Our Middle School science curriculum features the newest member of the Benjamin community, Squirtle the sea turtle. The loggerhead turtle was satellite tagged on April 21, 2021 by the Loggerhead Marinelife Center and began her journey on the nesting beaches adjacent to The Benjamin Lower/Middle School campus.

The tracking data from the turtle, named by Benjamin Middle School students, is used by the Research Department at LMC to document and discover where each tagged female nests throughout the nesting season.

In 2020, students analyzed the tracking data from a turtle named Benji as part of our science curriculum. The real-time tracking technology available to our students is beyond what is publicly available. This first-hand educational resource provides Benjamin students the unique opportunity of working with real-world scientific data.
