7th Grade Grows Mangroves For Coastline Restoration

Seventh grade Life Science and Marine Biology students, in collaboration with Loggerhead Marine Life Center, are growing mangroves for coastline restoration projects. 

The project allows them to conduct science research and ocean conservation outside the classroom. Students first transferred the mangroves from the classroom to an outdoor area and will plant them at a restoration site on the coast in late Spring. 

“Mangroves are essential for a healthy South Florida coastal ecosystem since they stabilize the shoreline and are an important nursery area for juvenile species,” said teacher Jenna LoDico. 

“Unfortunately, despite their critical importance, mangroves are being destroyed worldwide because of coastal development, aquaculture, and agriculture. Our students not only learn about this vital ecosystem but actively participate in restoration efforts.”
