US Students Win Annual Essay Contest

The Palm Beach branch of the English-Speaking Union recently named two Benjamin upper school students winners of their annual essay contest. The organization is a non-profit, non-political membership organization “whose mission is to promote scholarship and the advancement of knowledge through the effective use of English in an expanding global community.” 

 

Haley Roth ‘26 won first place in the contest for her essay on The Lorax’s impact on her love of literature. Evelyn Peyovich '24 won third place for her essay about Marianne Sheridan, a protagonist in Normal People, and the ability to be inspired by imperfect characters. 

 

Palm Beach County students in grades 10 through 12 were invited to submit their essays to the contest. This year’s prompt was, “How would it affect your life if your freedom to choose any book you wanted to read was taken away? Which character would you miss the most and why?”

 

The pair were honored for their accomplishments in a ceremony on April 16 at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in West Palm Beach where they read their essays aloud.
