Benjamin Athletics Launches Basketball Skills Academy

The Benjamin School Athletic Department has launched an exciting new program for basketball enthusiasts.

The Buccaneer Basketball Skills Academy is a coed skills program for players in grades three through eight.

The program will focus on the fundamentals of the game, including dribbling, shooting and passing.

The Academy will also help students with discipline, focus and confidence building.

Players will participate in scrimmages, while training directly with our Head Varsity basketball coaches.

Brandon Arnette '01 heads up the Buccaneer basketball program, after graduating from and coaching at the UMass Lowell.

“I’m excited about getting the job exactly 15 years after winning a state championship in 2001,” says Arnette.

“It brings back so many memories and great times. I’m hoping our athletes can have that same great experience. We have had a great level of commitment for the pre-season and we are going to be a surprise team in the area this season and for seasons to come,” Arnette says of the varsity basketball team.

Director of Athletics Ryan Smith '93 is also excited about the brand new opportunity for Benjamin students.

“It’s an opportunity for our varsity coaches to work with our younger Benjamin students on everything from the fundamentals of the game, to sportsmanship and teamwork,” says Smith.

“I hope the program will keep students enthused about the game and prepared to play at the varsity level.”

Smith says if the program is successful, there may be future opportunities to adopt similar programs for other sports.
