Leadership Speaker Series Features Renowned Geologist Dr. Daniel Schrag

Geologist Dr. Daniel P. Schrag, professor at Harvard University in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences and the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences shared findings from his research on global climate change with the upper school student body and the eighth grade class at the first Leadership Speaker Series presentation of the 2013-2014 school year.

 
Schrag, who additionally serves on President Barack Obama’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, also visited with students in their science classrooms and fielded questions from the audience during his program presentation.

“I study climate and climate change over the broadest range of Earth history,” explained Schrag during the special assembly held January 23 in the Healey Athletic Complex gymnasium facilitated by moderator Dirk Ziff who posed several questions to the esteemed guest. “What we learn from the geologic past can lead to a better understanding of anthropogenic climate change in the future,” said Schrag.

In addition to his work on geochemistry and climatology, Schrag studies energy technology and policy, including carbon capture and storage and low-carbon synthetic fuels. As Director of the Harvard-wide Center for the Environment, the 2000 recipient of the MacArthur Prize Fellowship and numerous prestigious awards, Schrag has recently been working on technological approaches to mitigating future climate change and the interactions between the environment and life.

"The Leadership Speaker Series, founded in 2009 by former Chairman of the Board of Trustees Dan Stanton, has hosted an extraordinary group of superb professionals since it begin here five years ago," explained Board of Trustees Chair Joe O’Connor, who welcomed the audience to the morning program.

"The goal of the series is to expose the Upper School community to professionals who have excelled in their given fields, and who will appeal to a broad range of student interests, ultimately inspiring them to become successful in life," said Director of College Counseling Kristen Learner who serves as advisor to the Leadership Speaker Series committee.
