Vineyard Vines Founders Speak to Benjamin Students

Shep and Ian Murray, brothers and founders of Vineyard Vines clothing, grew tired of the corporate lifestyle in Manhattan, and quit their high-paying jobs to start their own company.

Since the summer of 1998 when the duo began selling ties in Martha's Vineyard on capital from their accrued $40,000 credit card debt, the company has expanded nationally and was placed on Inc. magazine's 2007 list of the 500 fastest-growing businesses in the U.S. The relatively new company's revenue tripled to $37 million between 2004 and 2007.

The Murray brothers claim their business was founded through a philosophy of "living the good life."  Ian states, "The original idea was to take 'The Good Life' to work with us, then not to have to go into the city every day."

The entrepreneurs claim brand marketing as a key element to their company's success. Vineyard Vines' pink whale logo is emblazoned on a majority of its products prevalent among college campuses, the NFL, NHL and Major League Baseball.
