Dan Hicks - March 1, 2012

Upper school students assembled in the Healey Athletic Complex gymnasium March 1 for the second Leadership Lecture of the 2011-12 school year delivered by NBC sportscaster and weekend anchor, Dan Hicks. Following an introduction by Athletic Director Ryan Smith ’93, TBS parent Seth Waugh, who served as moderator at the special program, posed questions to the professional golf and sports commentator. Mr. Hicks’ career has also included announcing for the NBA, NFL, Notre Dame football, and the Olympic Games.

Mr. Hicks shared memorable highlights of his active career, including play-by-play coverage of Olympic Games' competitions, particularly speed skating and swimming, in addition to the Olympic Closing Ceremonies.

“Announcing the men's 4x100 freestyle relay at the 2008 Summer Olympics and chronicling USA's Michael Phelps’ come-from-behind win over France was definitely one of many highlights in my career thus far,” said Hicks. “You never know what will transpire as a sportscaster.”

Mr. Hicks, a graduate of the University of Arizona, who is also recognized for his impersonation talent, conveyed a few of his favorite impressions for the student body, including that of fellow NBC Sports colleague Bob Costas.

"You have to have a great deal of material prepared for the unexpected when you are announcing,” advised Mr. Hicks. “One of the most helpful tools for a sportscaster besides a trained voice is the ability to write well. If you’re interested in this field for a career, be sure to take as many journalism and writing courses as you can now and while you’re in college.” Mr. Hicks concluded the afternoon program by fielding questions from the student body of freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors.
