Benjamin Community Embraces Thanksgiving Spirit

The Benjamin community showed their thankful and giving hearts this fall, as all three divisions undertook numerous school-wide community service initiatives to benefit those in need in the broader community.

Benjamin lower and middle school families collected close to 3,000 pounds of food for CROS Ministries in Lake Worth, Florida. CROS Ministries feeds the hungry in Palm Beach and Martin county through community collaborations.

“In keeping with the School's mission, Benjamin works hard to inspire its students to develop a concern for others and a commitment to serve society,” said Director of Student Services Susan Poncy.

“This has been an integral part of the fabric and culture of the school since its inception. This year almost two tons of food was donated by the school community to the CROS community food bank, to be shared with people in western Palm Beach County whose livelihoods have been affected by Hurricane Irma's damage to the agricultural industry. The  generosity of the school community is something for which we can all be proud,” Poncy said.

Pre-Kindergarten students created beautiful placemats for local veterans in the VA Hospital nursing care unit. The project was the brainchild of Poncy, who thought it would be a great idea to have the students actively engaged in their project by drawing the placemats. Dr. Bijal Asrani, a physician at the Veterans Hospital in West Palm Beach and mother of pre-kindergarten student Nikhil Asrani delivered the placemats to the vets.

The third grade chose Urban Youth Impact, a non-profit organization in West Palm Beach, Florida, as the benefactor of their generosity. The class collected 90 gently used Halloween costumes to donate to the organization. The upper school collected food for the Youth Recreation League of Riviera Beach who will serve 3,000 Thanksgiving dinners through local churches.

The next school-wide community service initiative is the annual holiday toy drive. Poncy has arranged for the toys from the middle/lower divisions to be donated to children in the middle keys whose families are still struggling from the effect of the hurricane.
