'Benjamin Live' Shines Spotlight On Hidden TBS Talents

“Benjamin Live,” according to event founder Upper School Performing Arts Chair Jason Peck, is a reminder that everyone around us “has a story, a passion, and a spark worth sharing.”

The revue, hosted Monday October 26 at the upper school, brought students and faculty together for an entertaining evening celebrating the creativity and talent that make the Benjamin community unique.

Peck said the event’s tagline “You have no idea what your friends and faculty can do” says it all.

“That’s exactly the point. Every day we see each other in classrooms, hallways, on the field, and in the dining hall. But we rarely get to see the hidden sides of one another. The math teacher who plays a mean guitar. The quiet kid in third period who can belt a show tune. The coach who recites poetry. The lab partner who writes her own songs,” Peck said.

Peck said the event is about discovery and he hopes when the lights come up, people in the audience are turning to the person next to them and saying, “Wait, I had NO idea!”

“I want students to see their teachers as artists and risk-takers, and I want teachers to see their students shine in ways a classroom doesn’t always reveal,” he said. “We have such a rich, talented, generous community here, and so much of that talent lives just below the surface. This night is our chance to bring it into the light and celebrate it together.”
