The Benjamin School welcomes Marquita Smith as the Head Women’s Basketball Coach, A native of Maryville, Tennessee, Coach Smith brings a wealth of experience as both an accomplished athlete and a seasoned coach.
During her collegiate career at Maryville College, Coach Smith was a standout two-sport athlete in soccer and basketball. She earned All-GSAC Conference honors in both sports, set two school records in women’s soccer, and surpassed the 1,000-point milestone in basketball. Her teams made four NCAA Tournament appearances in basketball and one in soccer. In recognition of her exceptional contributions, she was awarded the prestigious J.D. Davis Award.
Coach Smith began her coaching journey at the young age of 16, actively contributing to local youth basketball and soccer programs. She went on to serve as an assistant coach at Maryville College, where she focused on player development for point guards and shooting guards, while also leading recruitment efforts.
After relocating to Alabama, Coach Smith held multiple coaching roles at Southside High School, including Assistant Varsity Coach for both basketball and soccer, and Head Coach for the JV basketball team. She later moved to Florida, where she served as an assistant basketball coach at Dwyer High School for seven years.
In recognition of her outstanding athletic and coaching achievements, Coach Smith was inducted into the Maryville College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2016 and the Blount County (TN) Athletic Hall of Fame in 2024.
With over 25 years of experience in coaching and player development—from youth programs to the collegiate level—Coach Smith brings a deep passion for the game and a proven track record of success. We are thrilled to have her join the TBS family and look forward to the impact she will make on our athletes.
