Head of MS Travels to Europe for Continued Holocaust Education

Head of Middle School Chuck Hagy traveled to Europe this summer to study the Holocaust as part of his work with the Jewish Foundation for the Righteous.

Hagy, an Alfred Lerner fellow, joined a group of roughly 20 educators who visited the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, and Sweden as part of their expanded Holocaust education.

Hagy told WPTV News that the group followed the trail of Anne Frank and her sister Margo, and saw the Frank family apartment, along with the annex where the Franks hid before they were discovered.

“We then ended our day at Bergen Belsen [concentration camp.] That was the most difficult experience of the trip,” he told the local news outlet. “I can say it changed the way that I view myself and my career and my role as a teacher and a school leader,” said Hagy.

The group also traveled to Amsterdam, Osnabruck, Flensburg, Froeslev, Copenhagen, Gilleleje, Helsingborg, and Malmo.

Hagy said studying history, especially its darker chapters, offers students the opportunity to ask important questions and learn valuable lessons.

“How are you going to actually participate in your world to create a kinder, more compassionate, more human place,” he questioned.
