The Benjamin School’s theater program received three nominations for this year’s Cappies Awards, including for Best Play for the Fall production of Lisa Loomer’s Distracted. The Cappies trains students to become theatrical journalists by reviewing and adjudicating high school productions from across South Florida.
Theater Director Jason Peck said the schools that participate are among some of the most prestigious high school theater programs in the state.
“I am beyond proud of our award-winning theater program here at The Benjamin School. I am always searching for material that gets the audience talking and reflecting. You don't get recognized for Best Play without it being truly an ensemble effort. I am so proud of the students’ work, the conversations they started, the hearts they pulled, and the smiles they created,” said Peck of what he described as a challenging text to undertake.
There will be a Tony-like award program at the Broward Performing Arts Center in mid-May where winners will be announced and all our artists will be recognized.
“To be nominated amongst some of the best high school theater programs in South Florida when we lost two of our final dress rehearsals to a hurricane is a testament to how special and dedicated our Thespians are on this campus. What a show! What a show!,” Peck said.
