Students Win National Art Awards

Eight students have received National Scholastic Art Awards, representing the top 1 percent of more than 300,000 submissions to the Alliance of Young Artists and Writers. Their works in photography, painting, and mixed media will be displayed at Parsons School of Design at The New School in New York City.

Visual Arts Department Chair Melissa Ford said she was overwhelmed with pride when she heard the news.

"It is an unbelievable accomplishment for a school or our size to have so many national winners. National winners are the top 1 percent of over 300,000 entries, the sheer statistical odds are daunting. I believe the outcome speaks volumes about the relationships the art teachers have with the students and our ability to challenge each student to achieve to their highest potential while feeling supported," said Ford.

The awards ceremony, originally scheduled for June in Carnegie Hall, will now be an online ceremony due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Ford said this change, however, does not dim the tremendous accomplishments of each of these talented artists.

Earlier this year, Upper School artists captured 121 Regional Awards including 25 Gold Keys.
